With the opening of the Golden Resources Shopping Mall, the largest mall in the world, and the expansion of the Wanlin Shopping Center, the largest in the northern area, Haidian District now provides a luxurious and convenient shopping environment for consumers.

The art-deco Golden Resources Mall, located near the Fourth West Ring Road, opened to great international fanfare on October 24, 2004. With a total investment of 3.8 billion yuan, it is one of the key projects of Beijing in 2003. The Mall has a floorage of 560,000 square meters (6-million square feet), spanning 600 meters from the east to the west and 120 meters from the north to the south. There are 5 floors above the ground and 2 floors underground, with 230 escalators, more than 1,000 shops, over 100 restaurants, and more than 10 entertainment and leisure facilities. Its large indoor parking lot boasts a parking capacity of over 6,800. Consumers can also drive their cars onto each commercial floor.

The Wanlin Shopping Center, with commercial space of over 38,000 square meters, is the largest shopping and leisure center in northern Haidian. There is a medium-sized underground supermarket, which mainly sells food and everyday items; from the first floor to the fourth floor is a discount plaza full of famous brands. A modern central air conditioning system is installed in the Center. The parking facility there can accommodate 500 vehicles.

In the next two years, many more large shopping centers will be built, among which is the Wanliu Shopping Center, only a street away from the western part of Zhongguancun. This new shopping center is scheduled to open for business in May 2006.

Along with new shopping centers, there are several large department stores in Haidian District such as Dangdai Plaza, Shuan’an Department Store, Chengxiang Trade Center, Ganjiakou Building, Cuiwei Building, Hua’ao Commercial Building, Qinghe Department Store, all of which are famous in Beijing. In addition, the district is home to famous large supermarkets that sell a variety of products. The already-well-known shopping centers and the newly built shopping malls, plus numerous supermarkets, constitute a convenient and comfortable shopping environment in Haidian District.
