Milestones of Internationalization

Starting from 2004, more than 100 multinational companies have established their presence here in Haidian District.

Towards the end of 2004, Lenovo’s acquisition of the personal computer business of IBM triggered another tide of internationalization, making it the world’s third largest PC manufacturer, and serving as a milestone in the internationalization of Zhongguancun Science Park.

Beijing Huaqi Information Digital Technology Co., Ltd, a leading domestic manufacturer in the fields of portable storage, digital products and self-assembling products, began to apply for a new logo, namely “aigo” and its products were ranked among the top 3 in the Singaporean market.

UFIDA Software, a leading provider of management software solutions and services in Asia, set up its subsidiary in Tokyo, Japan and built up a Market Development Center and Technical Support Service Center on the east and the west coasts of the US respectively. On April 19, 2005, UFIDA changed its name from UfSoft to UFIDA, and entered the Asia-Pacific market, forging ahead in its internationalization strategy.

Beijing Red Flag Software cooperated with the Norwegian Opera Software Company to provide users with the latest Opera browser in Linux desktop products. All these actions are sending a signal to the world that the pace of enterprises of Zhongguancun to “go global” has speeded up.

On June 30, 2005, Beijing Zhongguancun Software Park, together with India’s Tata Consultancy Service Co., Microsoft Corporation, Uniware and Tianjin Huanyuan Software Park Development Corporation announced their decision in Beijing to jointly invest in establishing a large-scale international software company with export outsourcing as its main business focus. This company will provide software and information technology outsourcing services to major markets such as the US, Europe, Asia Pacific as well as the Chinese mainland market.

A group of Global Fortune 500 enterprises and MNCs such as Intel, France Telecom, Ricoh, Texas Instrument, Qualcomm, NEC and Motorola have established their presence in the Park. Currently, there are 2,000 enterprises established by 5,000 Chinese returning from overseas to start their businesses in the Park, represented by Turenscape, Origin and Venus Info Tech INc, to name just a few.

Internationalization of the Zhongguancun Brand

The high-tech enterprises in Zhongguancun have embarked on the road of internationalization since the 1990s. In spite of various difficulties and obstacles, “going global” has become the common aspiration among the high-tech enterprises in Zhongguancun today.

Haidian Disctrict has witnessed not only great progress made in internationalization by increasing number of enterprises but also the growing world-wide awareness and recognition for the “Zhongguancun” brand.

Government Support for the Internationalization of Enterprises

As the demonstration unit of one-stop services for going overseas, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Haidian Government has taken the lead by setting up international service demonstration platforms to coordinate domestic and international resources. Last year, as part of the “borrowing foreign talents” policy implemented by Haidian government, a famous Indian software expert was engaged as the chief advisor for Haidian Science Park. It is the first move that Haidian Government has taken to promote the software outsourcing of Haidian and to build up a bridge for the exchanges of ideas between Chinese enterprises and foreign experts. Shortly afterwards, Haidian Science Park signed strategic cooperation agreements with the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-CS) and Gartner, a US consultancy firm. They are determined to set up partnerships and reach the objective of “cooperating with international giant companies through the bridges built up by the government”, so as to quicken the pace of internationalization of the enterprises in the Park.
